United Kingdom (PRunderground) July 03, 2009 – Following on from the bingo protest on Wednesday, labour back bencher MP Eric Illsley has crucially delivered 3 amendments to the finance bill. The previous Early Day Motion that was put up by Parmjit Dhanda MP received well over 100 hundred signatures and this has paved the way for the next move which is to submit amendments to the Finance Bill before it is passed in Parliament.
Bingo Operators have argued that the tax rise on gross profits raised from 15 percent to 22 percent in the last budget was too high and puts many bingo clubs at the risk of closure and potentially destroying the industry altogether.
Since many MPs signed the EDM, it is hoped that all of these MPs and many more who are becoming aware of the issue will now back the three amendments that will reduce the level of bingo tax the industry has to pay.
Today, Dave Holt of Seldis Cooper will have a meeting at 5.15pm with Yvette Cooper, the former secretary to the Treasury and now the Minister for Work and Pensions. It is hoped that Ms Cooper will be able to back the proposals to bring the tax in line with all other forms of gambling. Mr Holt commented “This is both a National Issue and a Regional Issue, society needs to have social interaction for all generations and bingo is unrivaled for performing consistent enjoyable entertainment. It has been said many times before that bingo is part of our social fabric, bingo clubs particularly for older people are a matter of life and death and anyone involved in bingo will understand this.”
Mr Holt went on to say “22 percent tax is simply and blatantly ripping off the industry when you compare this to bookmakers, casinos and online bingo, this imbalance is not just something that bingo players should get behind but this is also an issue for any person in the UK that believes in fairness and we would welcome this support from everyone.”
Bingo Supermarket will release a report tomorrow following on from the meeting with Yvette Cooper.
